Short answer

  • For the classic first trip (Tokyo, then Kyoto and Osaka, then home), the JR Pass usually costs more than buying Shinkansen tickets one by one. Tokyo → Kyoto plus Shin-Osaka → Tokyo is 28,890 yen (≈ $180) on Nozomi; the cheapest 7-day pass is 50,000 yen (≈ $320).
  • Adding Hiroshima gets you close, but not over. Tokyo → Osaka → Hiroshima → Tokyo adds up to 45,430 yen (≈ $290), still 4,570 yen (≈ $29) under the 7-day pass.
  • The pass pays when you go further west and back within 7 days: Tokyo → Osaka → Hakata → Osaka → Tokyo adds up to 61,480 yen (≈ $390).
  • Skipping the pass? Book Shinkansen seats online in English before you fly, pay by credit card, and board with a QR code.

Dollar figures are approximate, at the Federal Reserve's 156.87 yen per dollar (Oct. 23, 2026).

How we checked: pass price vs. the fares JR publishes

We're a small team based in Japan; we added up official fares against the official pass price.

The pass price. An Ordinary (standard-class) adult pass costs 50,000 yen (≈ $320) for 7 days, 80,000 (≈ $510) for 14 and 100,000 (≈ $640) for 21 on the official website, or 53,000 (≈ $340), 84,000 (≈ $540) and 105,000 yen (≈ $670) through an overseas designated agent. (Japan Rail Pass – prices)

The fares. Regular-season Nozomi reserved seats, one adult, one way, from a JR Central / JR West release dated 2026-10-16 (JR Central / JR West release, PDF). Tokyo ⇔ Kyoto is from JR Central's fare search (checked 2026-11-01), which JR labels a guide (JR Central – fare search).

Route (one way)Nozomi reserved seatHikari/Sakura reserved seat*
Tokyo ⇔ Kyoto14,170 yen (≈ $90)—
Tokyo ⇔ Shin-Osaka14,720 yen (≈ $94)14,400 yen
Tokyo ⇔ Hiroshima19,760 yen (≈ $130)18,910 yen
Shin-Osaka ⇔ Hiroshima10,950 yen (≈ $70)10,420 yen
Shin-Osaka ⇔ Hakata16,020 yen (≈ $100)15,280 yen

*Worked out from the same JR release: Hikari and Sakura run 320–850 yen below Nozomi on these routes, and they are the Shinkansen trains the pass covers. (Japan Rail Pass – routes)

Totals cover Shinkansen legs only.

Four itinerary types, side by side

All four use regular-season Nozomi fares and the 50,000-yen official-site 7-day pass.

Type 1 and Type 2: the classic first trip

Timing matters too: in a 10–14 day trip, your rides out and back may be more than 7 days apart, pushing you toward the 14-day pass at 80,000 yen. (Japan Rail Pass – about the pass)

Type 3: adding Hiroshima

Three legs: 45,430 yen on Nozomi, 43,730 yen on Hikari. Either way it stays under 50,000 yen. If you visit Miyajima, the pass doesn't cover the 100-yen Miyajima Visitor Tax. (JR Central / JR West release, PDF, Japan Rail Pass – routes)

Type 4: when the pass pays

Going out to Hakata and back doubles the long legs: 61,480 yen on Nozomi, 59,360 yen on Hikari/Sakura. The 50,000-yen pass saves 11,480 yen (≈ $73), or 9,360 yen. All four rides must fit inside the 7 days. (JR Central / JR West release, PDF, Japan Rail Pass – prices)

Where the line moves

Season. Reserved seats cost 200 yen less off-peak, 200 yen more in peak season and 400 yen more in the busiest season (double on sections that cross the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines, such as Tokyo ⇔ Hiroshima). (smartEX – service details) Even at the busiest-season rate, Type 3 rises only to 47,030 yen.

July 2027. Nozomi and Mizuho reserved seats rise for tickets purchased from July 1, 2027; Hikari and Sakura don't change. Type 3 then comes to 47,250 yen, still under the pass. (JR Central / JR West release, PDF)

Booking online. smartEX sells regular-season Nozomi reserved seats for 13,970 yen (≈ $89) Tokyo ⇔ Kyoto and 14,520 yen (≈ $93) Tokyo ⇔ Shin-Osaka. That makes Type 2 28,490 yen (≈ $180). (smartEX – reserved-seat fares, PDF)

If you skip the pass: how to buy Shinkansen tickets

For Types 1–3, smartEX lets you buy tickets and reserve seats before you arrive, for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. There's no annual fee and no service fee. (smartEX – beginner's guide, smartEX – app)

  1. Check your card first. smartEX needs a credit card with 3D Secure (your card's identity check) turned on; match it against the "Accepted credit cards" logos in the beginner's guide. Payment is in yen, so a foreign transaction fee may apply, even on each change. (smartEX – beginner's guide, smartEX – registration)
  2. Book. Sales open at 5:30 a.m. one year before the travel date and close 4 minutes before departure, for 1 to 6 people per booking. Seats booked that early are confirmed after 8:00 a.m. one month before travel. (smartEX – service details)
  3. Change freely if plans move. Changes before departure are free, as many times as you like, within 3 months of purchase. Refunds before departure cost 320 yen (≈ $2) for an Ordinary reserved seat. (smartEX – service details)
  4. Choose how to board: a QR ticket on your phone that you hold to the gate, a paper ticket, or an IC card. With an IC card, the fare is charged to your credit card, not the card balance; visitor IC cards such as Welcome Suica expire 28 days after purchase. (smartEX – beginner's guide, smartEX – app)
  5. For paper tickets, pick up before boarding with your pickup code and login password: at ticket machines from 3 days before travel, or JR Central, JR West and JR Kyushu counters from one month before. Carry the card you paid with; staff may check it. (smartEX – ticket pickup)

Two other official English sites that take card payment online:

JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATIONBooks from 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before, up to 6 minutes before departureInsert the physical card you paid with at a station machine
JR-EAST Train ReservationPays by VIEW CARD, JCB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Diners Club; no prepaid or virtual cardsReserved-seat ticket machine with a QR pickup code

On JR-WEST, boarding without collecting your ticket means buying it again at full price. (JR West – conditions, JR West – pickup, JR-EAST Train Reservation – FAQ, JR-EAST – pickup)

If a card is declined: JR-EAST Train Reservation suggests another card or buying at the station. JR Central ticket machines all have English menus, and JR East's reserved-seat machines work in English and take credit cards. (JR-EAST Train Reservation, JR Central – buying tickets, JR East – tickets)

If you buy the pass: the conditions

No Nozomi or Mizuho without an add-on. The pass isn't valid on any seat on Nozomi and Mizuho trains unless you buy a "NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket" before boarding: 4,960 yen (≈ $32) Tokyo/Shinagawa ⇔ Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, 6,500 yen (≈ $41) Tokyo/Shinagawa ⇔ Hiroshima, 4,960 yen Nagoya ⇔ Hiroshima; no add-on price is listed between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, so plan on Hikari or Sakura there. You need one per ride, and it can't be reserved online before you arrive in Japan. (Japan Rail Pass – routes, JR Central – NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket) On Type 3, riding Hikari from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima and adding two add-ons puts you at 61,460 yen (≈ $390), against 45,430 yen in plain Nozomi tickets.

Who and how. It's for sightseeing visitors entering as a "temporary visitor," can't be extended or shared once started, and isn't valid on JR Bus express routes. (Japan Rail Pass – eligibility, Japan Rail Pass – conditions of use)

Regional passes. If most of your rail time sits in one region, compare an area pass instead (our separate guide).

Buying the JR Pass: official site or overseas agent

If your fares add up to more than the pass price, as in Type 4, buy the JR Pass here:

Official websiteOverseas designated agent
7-day Ordinary, adult50,000 yen53,000 yen
What you receivePass bought onlineExchange Order, swapped for the pass in Japan
CurrencyYen, credit card in the buyer's nameLocal currency, converted from yen on the issue date

On the official site you need only your passport and a credit card, and you can book Shinkansen seats online before arriving. An agent's Exchange Order must be exchanged within three months of issue. Refunds come only before the start date, in principle, with a 560-yen (≈ $4) fee on official-site passes. Check your own route in five steps

  1. List every Shinkansen ride with its date.
  2. Price each ride from the fare table, or JR Central's fare search.
  3. Find your busiest 7 days and add up only the rides inside that window.
  4. Compare with 50,000 yen (official site) or 53,000 yen (agent). If you want Nozomi with a pass, add the add-on price (4,960 or 6,500 yen) per Nozomi ride on the sections above; where no add-on price is listed, plan on Hikari or Sakura.
  5. Decide. Under the pass price: book point-to-point on smartEX or at the station. Over it: buy the JR Pass, and check the refund rule first.

What the official sources don't say yet

  • Your card brand. For JR-WEST, search "credit card" in its English FAQ. (JR West – FAQ)
  • Your own date's fare. Expect the table above, give or take 200–400 yen per ride by season, or 400–800 yen on rides that cross from one Shinkansen line to another, such as Tokyo ⇔ Hiroshima. Enter your date in JR Central's fare search for the exact figure. (smartEX – service details, JR Central – fare search)
